He moved to Israel in his youth, lived on kibbutz and joined the army. He is a pioneer and leader in the peace process, having met with Palestinians in Europe when it was illegal to meet in Israel.

For several years Hillel was chair of Democrats Abroad in Israel.
He is co-editor of the award winning Palestine Israel Journal http://www.pij.org. On May 13th in Vienna, Hillel and his Palestinian colleague and co-editor, Ziad AbuZayyad, received with the 2024 Ari Rath Prize for Critical Journalism on behalf of Palestine-Israel Journal, given by the Bruno Kriesky Forum for International Dialogue.
